Rating: 90-92 pts by Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes offers up appealing aromas of red cherries, cocoa nib, Asian spices and rose petal, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and layered palate with a tangy core of fruit, fine tannins that are a little emphasized by the wine’s recent racking, and a long, vibrant finish. It displays excellent energy for the site and should develop well in bottle.

Longtime fans of Domaine Méo-Camuzet will be delighted by the 2017 vintage at this address, as the domaine has produced an attractive collection of charming, supple wines that are beautifully defined by site but which will also be unusually approachable out of the gates. While many of the wines had been racked not long before my tasting, they were still expressive, and I suspect they will prove even more satiny and gourmand in bottle. Méo began picking on September 6, finishing just over a week later. Like many others, he reports that the wines fleshed out considerably during élevage and is thinking of bottling them a little earlier than usual.” – William Kelley,  The Wine Advocate, January 2019

Beskrivelse

Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru “Les Chaumes” 2017

There is much finesse and elegance in this wine, very typical of the Vosne-Romanée appellation. Fullness and charm coexist here, in a wine which is not as awe-inspiring as the superb crus, “les Brûlées” and “Cros Parantoux”, but which is easy to drink and will quickly seduce you.

The good vintages age well, but this wine has a distinct advantage in its youth: indeed, its finesse makes it ideal for early tasting.

Maturing

In casks, its development depends on the vintage; but generally speaking, it remains a wine that can be assessed fairly early, and which rapidly gives you an idea of the general character of a year.

There’s no need to worry about finesse, and in this case, the vinification requires a little more extraction in order to push the wine to its limits. The cap will be broken up more often and the vatting temperatures will be a little higher.

Vines

The years of the plantings are fairly different: the late 50’s for one part and during the 70’s for the other. The older part is almost the more productive and gives fairly large cylindrical grapes. The sugar-acid balance is excellent. The younger part gives smaller grapes, sometimes even small grapes, but riper with less structure.

Situation

At the foot of “la Tâche” and “les Malconsorts”, in a slightly deeper clay soil, we have the good fortune to possess two plots of a total surface area of about 4 acres. With its classic eastward orientation and good supply of water, it is a fairly “solar” vineyard which cannot be considered as a late ripener.
